Setting goals for your life

June 20th, 2007 · 197 Comments

Many of us know about this and really never have the time to do this. I should not say dont have time, we have all the time in the world. We spend lots of time to plan for our wedding, plan for our renovation, when we should go shopping etc…

But seriously, have you plan what kind of life you want to live? Huh? Setting goals is one step towards knowing what you want in your life, and what you intend to achieve. I used to set many goals for myself but I have problem remembering what I write down and most of the time the piece of paper will got missing. But i have found a simple way now to keep all these online.

How to set goals: ( get pen, paper. or notepad, excel)

1. List 5 things you have accomplished in your life that you are proud of: ( It can be anything at all, as long as you are proud of it.) Eg. own a car, condo, etc..

2. Write down 50 things you want in the next ten years;

- things you want to have, to do, places to visit, skills to be learn, habits, hobbies, money…anything ( If you have problem listing more then ten items, you have a serious problem. You need to spend more time thinking about what kind of life you want)

( 30mins to 1hour, more time if you need to)

3. Once completed your list of wants. All you have to do next is to write down 1, 3, 5,10 beside each want, signifying when you want to achieve the want, 1year, 3years or 5,10.

4. Finally, sorted them in order of number of years. So, your short-terms goals are those with 1years, and long term goals are those of 10years. You should have a well balance goals for each type of goals. If you have too many short-term goals, then you should think a bit more into the future. And else, if you have too many long term goals, you should work on yourself to get some short-term goals.

5. Then, now you have your life planned. You have to work towards all these goals. You can change along the way in your life, but this list should follow you where ever you might be.

6. For those important goals in your life, you need to answer to yourself why are those goals important to you. Reason: When the why get stronger, the how gets easier!!! In other words, if you have a strong reason for the goals you set, its easier for you to find the ways to do it.

Finally, where to keep this list and ensure you keep working on it yourself. Well, I simply put everything on my It is a online contact management site, (free) and offers easy synchoronization with MSOutlook. Just add this goals as Task with a end date to achieve. All the goals will be sorted from the short-term goals to the long terms goals based on the calendar date. So, you will be able to see your set of goals anywhere, anytime, anyhow.!

Cheers. Hope this works for you too.
